Choosing something to watch on Netflix can be an issue. Lots of stuff thrown at you with a minimal explanation of what it is. You just keep scrolling, and scrolling… We’ve been there. To save you some time, here’s a list of 10 TV shows/films that deserve your attention.
1. Good time
This is NOT a happy film. Only watch if you’re in a destructive mood. It’s a serious drama that keeps getting worse with every minute. This movie portrays how deep in trouble one can get, and how significantly worse it can become.
2. Spirited Away
If you’ve never watched any anime, Spirited Away is a good place to start. It will take you on a journey to a world beyond your wildest imagination. A story that both adults and kids can relate to, not many films are like that.
3. Love Death + Robots
This is a must watch. Each episode is created by a different studio, which makes them all one of a kind. Definitely has its similarities to Black Mirror. Some episodes carry a deep meaning, some are there to laugh, some to frighten the hell out of you.
4. Age of Samurai, Battle for Japan
Samurai, feudal Japan. If you ever thought that Japan’s history is filled with respect and honour, you couldn’t be more wrong. Men creating unnecessary bloodbaths due to their deluded strivings, people born into war, made into warriors, fighting and dying for nothing. It’s like watching a witty, ever-developing TV series and wondering “what stupid stuff will they do next?”.
5. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
This movie will give you an adrenaline rush. Two crackheads with a suitcase of drugs, travelling across the USA. It’s funny, brutal at times and a pretty accurate representation of how different drugs affect you.
6. Freud
Psychological, based on a real person, neurologist Sigmund Freud. The story is fictional however. It explores psychic powers, hypnosis and interesting crime solving. If you’re a fan of Sherlock Holmes, this one is a must watch.
7. Dark
German alternative to Stranger Things. A weird town, somebody goes missing, and a mystery unveils. If you enjoy stories with a “search for the mysterious unknown” factor, you should totally check it out.
8. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
This movie is a pack for every occasion. Six different stories, all funny, all with a moral (if you can find it).
9. Beasts of No Nation
It’s marvellous and colourful like a Scarlet Macaw, but violent to the core. If it’s something serious and astonishingly beautiful you’re craving, this film is the way to go. It shows the harsh realities of civil wars in Africa.
10. The Midnight Gospel
It’s an animated podcast that will blow your mind at times. Existential talks, good humour and interesting guests. If you’re a fan of Duncan Trussell, you probably watched it already. If you’re not, you will become one after watching.
